Psychiatry is the medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of mental illness.
Note that there are specialties, and in particular:
child psychiatry .
To better understand, remember that a mental illness is a set of disturbances occurring at the level of thoughts, behavior or emotions. It causes, for the individual suffering from it, a personal distress as well as difficulties in the social or professional relations.
When to go to the psychiatrist?
The disorders that enter the field of psychiatry are numerous. These include:
the depression ;
the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) ;
the schizophrenia (defined as a loss of contact with reality);
eating disorders (such as anorexia and bulimia )
autism spectrum disorders;
deficit disorders of attention;
Some people are at higher risk for the development of mental illness. Some recognized risk factors include:
toxic factors (such as cannabis that increases the risk of developing schizophrenia);
Social factors (poor working conditions, insecurity, etc.);
Depending on the diagnosis, the psychiatrist deals with the mental illness himself or coordinates the treatment to be given to his patient. He can propose:
even different neurostimulation techniques.
Psychiatrists can work in private practice, but also in a multidisciplinary team (nurses, psychologists , social workers …) in hospitals or specialized centers.
What risks during the consultation?
The consultation with a psychiatrist does not involve particular risks for the patient.
How to become a psychiatrist?
To become a psychiatrist, you must hold a specialized studies diploma (DES) in psychiatry:
the student must first follow, after his baccalaureate, 6 years at the Faculty of Medicine;
At the end of the 6th year, the students pass the national classifying tests to access the boarding school. Depending on their rank, they will be able to choose their specialty and place of practice. The DES in psychiatry is obtained after 4 years of internship in psychiatry.
Finally, to be able to practice and carry the title of doctor, the student must also support a research thesis. Marham – Find a Doctor has a faculty for training of unexperienced psychiatrists.
After college, the student must:
take a four- or five-year doctoral degree in medicine (with or without a preparatory year in medicine for students admitted with a college or university education considered insufficient in basic biological sciences);
Then specialize in a psychiatric residency for 4 years.
